Dear Parents and Kids,
This book was born from the bloodshed of parent-teenager struggles and misunderstandings. There is nothing special about me as a parent that qualifies me for writing a book for parents or kids like you. I have no Ph.D. I have no near-death experience to relate. I haven’t been first or best at anything. I am noteworthy for only one thing – for being very much like you.
Each chapter will explain itself. Hopefully you will discover that another ordinary family’s joys and tears are reflections of your own. My biggest hope is that you will find new ways to talk together in your home about the rich experiences of your own lives and come to an understanding between parent and teen that includes warmth, humor, and love.
After each chapter ask yourselves, “What does this story remind me about in my life?” Put a fire in the fireplace, settle into a pile of pillows, grab some caramel popcorn, and sip hot chocolate. Then reminisce. Not only as parent and child, but as new friends just beginning to enjoy an exciting new journey through life.
If you would like a few inspirational works to help inform and enrich your “fireside chats,” turn to the appendix. These books, poems, songs, and authors that have touched me through the years are part of what inspired and informed these writings. Perhaps they will also touch you.
There is no right or wrong way to view any story. Just open your hearts to each other and…remember to smile.
